This year’s Fourth of July: not just another summer cookout and fireworks show.

On July 4, 2026, the United States turns 250 years old, marking the Semiquincentennial of the Declaration of Independence. That single sheet of parchment, signed by 56 men in Philadelphia in 1776, set in motion 250 years of American history, a history rooted in biblical principles and Godly morals that our founders understood came from the hand of Providence, not the hand of man.

For those of us raising the next generation of Christian kids, this milestone is more than a history lesson. It is an opportunity to sit with our children and tell them where we came from, and to remind them that gratitude for freedom, like gratitude for God’s mercy and grace, is something worth celebrating with purpose.

A year of celebration, rooted in faith.

America’s 250th celebration did not begin this week. It began on May 17th, when thousands gathered on the National Mall in Washington, DC for a day of prayer, Scripture, and testimony, rededicating our nation “to God” and giving thanks for 250 years of American history. Before the fireworks and the flyovers, before the concerts and the parades, this nation paused to pray. That is the story we want our children to know.

On Memorial Day 2026, the White House’s Task Force 250 launched a full year of festivities under a public-private partnership called Freedom 250. Six mobile “Freedom Trucks” have been touring all 48 contiguous states, stopping at schools, libraries, national parks, and community gatherings to tell the story of American independence face to face, reaching families exactly like yours.

From June 25th through July 10th, all 50 states and our US territories enjoy a World’s Fair-style exposition celebrating on the National Mall what makes this nation worth appreciating. On July 3rd, PBS broadcast live from the West Lawn of the Capitol with a tribute to the Artemis astronauts, a salute to Team USA’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes, and a concert by the National Symphony Orchestra.

July 4th itself is filled with big celebrations: military flyovers, star-studded entertainment, and a historic 40-minute fireworks display to close out the day, the largest this nation has ever seen.

But the celebrations do not end on the 4th. There is an Indy car race August 22-23, a DC Jazz Festival September 2-6, a block party at the Smithsonian September 24-27, and a huge celebration on Veterans Day November 11th.

Why this matters for our kids.

It would be easy to let all of this pass by as background noise, another headline scrolling past on a screen. But 250 years is not a number that comes around often, and our children are growing up in the middle of it.

This is a natural, God-given moment to talk with our kids about where freedom actually comes from. Scripture tells us in Galatians 5:1 that it is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Our nation’s independence and our spiritual freedom are not the same thing, but they are not unrelated either. A nation founded by men who believed their rights came from their Creator, not from a king, is a nation whose story points straight back to Him. Teaching our children to see freedom as a gift from God, rather than something owed to them, is discipleship. It is one of the most important habits of the heart we will ever pass down.

A few simple ways to bring the 250th into your own home this year.

• Read the Declaration of Independence aloud together and talk through what “unalienable rights, endowed by their Creator” meant to the men who signed it, many of whom risked their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to do so.
• Watch the fireworks, whether from the National Mall broadcast or your own backyard, and use the moment to talk about sacrifice, not just spectacle.
• Visit a local museum or historic site participating in the 250th commemorations as a family. Let your children touch history, not just scroll past it.
• Pray together as a family for this nation, its leaders, and its future, the same way Rededicate 250 gathered thousands to do on the National Mall in May. Ask God to bring revival to America, not just recognition of her birthday.
• Start a conversation about legacy. Ask your children what they hope America looks like when it turns 300, and what part they might play in building it as a disciple of Jesus Christ.

A once-in-a-lifetime milestone.

This is our opportunity to mark 250 years of a nation founded on biblical principles and Godly morals, a nation that has never been perfect but has always been Providence’s project. Whatever your family’s plans this Independence Day, take a moment with your children to make it count. Pray with them. Ask God to bless this nation and to raise up a generation who will lead it in righteousness. Thank Him for His faithfulness in the past 250 years, and ask Him to continue guiding you as you raise the next generation of His disciples.
