Do you have a Goliath pestering you? Is there a bully agitating your child? If so, you might find this biblical story helpful.
Remembering King David is to be crowned the king, we understand:
Faith, along with love, casts out fear, and that’s why David could fight Goliath. What is the basis of David’s faith? He knows he has a great secret that God’s holy prophet has anointed him to be king of Israel. But he’s not yet king, and if he is killed, that will make God out to be a liar. David, therefore, can go into battle knowing he’s invincible until he’s finally anointed king.
The description of the giant, “bronze and scaled coat of mail, depicts him as a snake,” he represents “the seed of the serpent.” The coat of mail is a jacket covered with metal rings or plates, serving as armor. David, who still lives with his parents, represents “the seed of the woman.”
David then takes the skull of Goliath to Jerusalem and buries it. Why does he do that? David clearly understands that his victory is emblematic of the victory of the Seed of the Woman. And that Moriah is the place where God revealed to Abraham that the Lord’s redemption would be provided as Abraham offered up his only son. The homonymic name, “Goliath of Gath,” contributes to the name later given to Golgotha, the place of the skull (Matt 27:33). It is where the Seed of the Woman would defeat the serpent, and the sting of sin would be swallowed up in victory as Jesus is crucified.
Reword this information and share it with your child! Remember, we face evil giants every day in our world. Even though they may not be 9 feet tall, they are equally intimidating. This story can teach our children to rely on Jesus as their savior and that they have the Holy Spirit’s power to overcome whatever giants they are facing.
