Easter springs forth newness of life.
The days are longer and warmer, birds begin to hatch, flowers start to bloom, and trees set forth their buds; new life abounds. For the Christian, Easter is the hope of eternal life given to us through Christ’s death on the cross. He paid the debt for our sins, was buried in a tomb, and resurrected three days later. Because Jesus defeated death, we have the assurance that we can live forever with Him.
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.
As we’re celebrating Easter with our children how can we imbed in our families the trueness of Easter and still enjoy Easter fun? Below are some simple ideas that you can incorporate with your children that will bridge the true meaning of Easter while keeping the fun.
1. Prayer Box
Using a shoebox or other small box, have children paint/decorate the box with bright spring colors with an opening at the top. Write ‘Prayer Box’ on it with a small note that says something like, ‘Place your prayer requests in the box and we will pray for you.’ Be sure to state that the requests can be anonymous. Put some small slips of paper with a couple of pencils beside the prayer box. Put the prayer box beside your mailbox, front door, or on the sidewalk, wherever people will see it. Each day, have your children check the box for requests. As a family pray over those requests daily and watch how God moves. This will impact not only your children, but parents as well as you see God move in the lives of those in your sphere.
Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
2. Easter Cross Craft
A fun Easter craft is to decorate crosses to keep. The crosses can be small, medium, or large and can be found at craft stores or online. You can also glue popsicle sticks together! Children can use their creativity and decorate with buttons, beads, trinkets, etc. Be sure to write your child’s name and year on the back for a keepsake (if you don’t give them away). You can hang them around the house or in your children’s bedroom as a reminder of the gift and goodness of Jesus.
Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
3. Easter Basket Gift Ideas
Easter baskets are such a great joy for children. There are so many items you can include that it can be overwhelming! Here is a good place to start:
- Chocolate crosses
- Chocolate covered eggs
- Easter faith t-shirts
- Christian children’s books
- Easter egg coloring kits
- Marshmallow chicks
These are plentiful on Amazon or other online sites. Children will always enjoy receiving these.
Psalms 119:103 How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
4. Easter Egg Hunt
Children both young and older enjoy Easter egg hunts. I love watching them scamper from place to place looking for the coveted eggs to place in their baskets. God promises that His Word will not return void. Within a few of the plastic Easter eggs, include a simple scripture in them. Have children recite the scripture each day for a few days. Then use these same Bible verses on a springtime coloring page and hand out to a few of your neighbors. Afterward, take your children to get their favorite ice cream. Use this opportunity to share with your children that by blessing others, God will bless them.
Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”
5. Easter Egg Decorating
Children love to create, so why not have an Easter egg decorating time with your family? While decorating the eggs, discuss with your children how each egg is unique and different, just like God made us unique and different. We all look different and that is just one of the amazing ways that the LORD shows His beautiful creation. We are one of a kind, just like our decorated Easter eggs are one of a kind.
Psalm 139-14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
As you prepare for and celebrate Easter, I pray that your family relishes in the goodness and glory of God’s grace towards humankind. Be sure to share His life-changing gift with those you meet and spread the joy of life that only He can give. He is risen, He is risen indeed.
