The Shema is a commandment prayer for all of us- especially those who are raising Christian kids!
The Shema was an essential prayer to the Jews. Today, it applies to every Christian household as well. It is considered to be the most important prayer and is deeply rooted in the Bible. This prayer is a reminder of our commitment to love the Lord our God- every day, every moment, and in all areas of our lives. It is vitally important to teach our children to do the same. The Shema, in addition to other wonderful biblical commands, requires allegiance to God alone.
God reminded Israel that “these commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts” and to “meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.” Meditate means to think deeply, profoundly, and immensely- not passively, not as a fleeting thought.
Moses commands the adults first regarding their relationship with the Lord. Moses knows the hearts of the adults must be right before they can teach the children.
The foundation of God must be built by a qualified builder who understands and believes in the directives and then implements them.
This week, make a prayer shawl for your child. Take a piece of fabric and sew some tassels on the end. Let them pick a few simple Bible verses to say as they wear their shawl and touch each tassel. Ask them to be the Rabbi and teach you the word of God!
