God’s word says, “when you fast,” not IF you fast!
Fasting is a spiritual practice in many religions that allow us to be sacrificial. We can partake in fasting in many other ways, not only with food deprivation. Many problems arise from children fasting from food due to their smaller size and increased metabolic needs. Even with short fasts from food, children have shown to have a decrease in their cognitive functioning. Our children should learn about the biblical directive of fasting and the reasons for fasting, and those who have health issues should not fast from food and find another way to be sacrificial to the Lord.
Few of the many reasons why we fast:
- To strengthen prayer
- To seek God’s guidance
- To seek deliverance or protection
- To express repentance and a return to God
- To humble oneself before God
- To overcome temptation and dedicate ourselves to God
- To express love and worship for God
Some ways your child can fast besides giving up food:
- Giving up TV
- Giving up video games
- Limiting cell phone use
- Giving up social media
- Negative attitudes and bad behavior
