Experiencing God Through Our Senses

Experiencing God Through Our Senses Lee Ann Mancini

Did you know we have more than five senses?

Our senses become engaged through experience, and our children learn tremendously through manipulating objects and engaging their senses. When we engage in the world, this is a symbol-centered approach. Children love the divine and mysterious ways of God and to experience his creation through nature. Creation isn’t merely experienced in a moment; it needs to be continually lived out through ordinary moments. It is important to share these moments with our children and connect to God by adhering to the Shema command.

Here are some tips to help you and your child connect with God on a deeper level:

  1. Take a nature walk. Before going on the walk, pray that God will open your senses to observe his presence in his creation. Then, take a pen and notepad to describe what you are seeing and feeling. Ask your child, “What do you smell, what do you hear, and what types of textures do you see?
  2. Listen to the sounds of nature. Ask your child, “does the sound of a rain shower draw you closer to God?” Reflect on a personal childhood memory that involves music and share your thoughts with your children.
  3. Touch is another wonderful sense. It is so powerful it can heal the sick and mend a broken heart. Buy different materials and ask your children to touch them. Ask them, “How does the material make you feel, and can you connect those feelings to God’s word?”
  4. Wash each other’s feet and let them feel the comfort of you washing their feet. Tell them the story of how the son of God who created all things washed the filthy feet of his disciples!
  5. Engage their sense of smell and taste. Plan a picnic on a blanket in the backyard with all kinds of treats – make sure to have some foods they have never tasted. As they taste the food, ask them to tell you what they are tasting and how it makes them feel.

These are some of the many ways to experience God and his creation through our wonderful senses and to help our children do the same!
