“A new commandment I give you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” – John 13:34

Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate love, and what better way to celebrate than by bringing Jesus into the holiday? Here are 5 easy ideas you can incorporate together with your family:

1. Of course, pray together.

In the business of life, we may neglect this important biblical directive. Praying is a great way to set the tone for the day. When you pray together, you are creating an unbreakable bond by sharing your hearts with each other and God. This is when you can express your love and desires for each other’s lives.

2. Give Christian-themed gifts.

Go to your local Christian bookstore/shop! You don’t have to spend a fortune; it really is the thought that counts. Here are some ideas:

  • A Bible
  • Book of daily devotions
  • A Christian-themed coloring book
  • Christian mugs
  • Bookmarks
  • Small toys

If you don’t want to spend money, a handwritten note expressing your love can be a meaningful gift. Also, send a love letter from Jesus using His words from the Bible.

3. Talk about all the ways Jesus shows his love for us.

What a loving Savior we have! Here are just a few ways He shows His love for us that you can explain to your child:

  • Jesus provides for our needs. When we pray for His provision, He always comes through. Whether it’s a new job, financial blessing, or simply meeting a need we didn’t even know we had, Jesus always provides according to His perfect will.
  • Jesus gives us hope. He is the hope of the world and the hope of our salvation. When we put our trust in Him, we can always be assured that He will never leave us or forsake us.
  • Jesus gives us peace. In the midst of the storm, He is always there to calm our fears and give us His peace.
4. Spend time talking about Bible verses that demonstrate love.

Sit down and have everyone write their favorite Bible verse about love – for younger children, write them for them and use this time to help them memorize the verses! Here are some Bible verses about love:

  • Corinthians 13:4-8 – Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. … It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.
  • John 13:34-35 – A new commandment I give to you: that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
  • 1 Corinthians 16:14 – Let all that you do be done in love.
  • John 15:12-13 – Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
5. Make a handmade Valentine’s Day card with an encouraging message from Scripture.

You can use the Bible verses from above as a place to start! This is a great way to share the love of Christ with others. These verses speak of the true nature of what love is and should be.

At the end of your Valentine’s Day (and every day), spend some time reflecting on all the ways God has shown His love to you, and thank Him for His faithfulness.
