Review the questions and see which questions you answered that are labeled C or D. Those are the questions where growth is needed or action should be taken. Your goal is to become stronger in the weak areas so that you can confidently re-answer the questions next time, choosing either A or B. This part of the assessment is to help you understand how you can improve your parenting techniques or understand where you need help with parenting or help personally to become all you need to be for God to use you as an effective tool to raise the next generation of spiritual warriors for Christ.

Have you ever wondered what is the most important prayer or Bible verse for giving direction and guidance to parents? Many theologians believe it is the Shema (shuh-mah) prayer, rooted in Deuteronomy 6:5–9 and reframed in Deuteronomy 11:13–21. It is considered to be the most essential prayer for the Jewish people. They are commanded to pray it twice a day, and it must permeate all areas of their lives, prompting them to love God with all of their being and teach their children to do the same.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

As parents, we are to be our children’s compasses, walking beside them and pointing them in the right direction. If we don’t, the world will happily lead them in the wrong direction! Studies have shown that a positive, close relationship between parents and children is connected to their perception of a loving and forgiving God. This reinforces that we are made in His image and should reflect it daily in all we do and say.

Let our thoughts and words be guided by the Father, and let our actions do His work. Let our habits be in line with His will so that our character reflects His Holy Spirit that dwells within us. As best as we can, let our children witness heaven on earth in all we say and do with a humble heart.
