Did you know that a lack of this virtue can also have a negative long-term effect on our DNA?
Dr. Amit Sood spoke about why humans don’t like to get bored. He stated people are “designed to be impatient.”
Impatience is not merely the opposite of patience. Impatience can bring us anxiety, illness, injury, loneliness, and even death. It can be the cause of many serious illnesses. Impatience, or a lack of patience, can even have a negative long-term effect on our DNA.
A good way to teach the concepts of sharing and patience is to have your child sit in a circle with her friends. Bring out a new toy for them to pass around. Each child will hold the toy until a timer buzzes and then pass it to the next child. Then, have each child talk about the new toy. They are only able to hold the toy once at a time and have to wait their turn.
Patience is connected with the Fruit of the Spirit as well. Read Ephesians 4:2, Colossians 3:12, and Romans 12:12 to explore the connection of patience among the Fruit of the Spirit.
1 Timothy 1:16 states, “But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.”
The story of Job in the Bible is an exceptional example of patience while enduring suffering. Early on, children need to learn that fulfillment of desires may take time. Learning to be patient will help your child avoid becoming a rude, vitriolic, self-serving, self-centered adult.
