What Makes a Good Christian Picture Book? Lee Ann Mancini

How can picture books help you raise godly kids? They may seem simplistic, but they can and should be informative resources to draw your child closer to Jesus.

Simple, bold illustrations are the best. Technique and style, in addition to color, should induce emotion and convey meaning.

Children learn through their senses and environment. A picture book that allows them to “feel” what they are hearing or “feel” what they see can profoundly impact them. It does this to adults as well. It is wise to make sure the picture book is written and illustrated so that it creates emotion. Also, the storyline must be easy to understand and follow but should also have interesting language. I think it is beneficial when a book uses biblical words that allow children to ask questions. Words such as faith, salvation, glorification, etc.

Children’s interactive books are very beneficial. My books are on a free app called Novel Effect that keeps children engaged with the story. When you click on the app located on your smart device and start to read the physical book in your hand, the app plays the sound effects of the page you are reading. This encourages children to read because they want to trigger the sounds with their voices. This is an active way to draw our children closer to the Lord, whether it be a biblical story or a Christian picture book. My book series, Sea Kids, consists of 7 picture books that teach different morals and biblical concepts throughout each story.

In addition to my book series, a few other Christian children’s book authors that are my favorite are Crystal Bowman, Michelle Medlock Adams, and Max Lucado. Anything written by Crystal Bowman is excellent. She has written over 100 Christian children’s books. God has truly gifted her for writing children’s books, and her daughter is also following in her footsteps as they have co-written a few recent children’s books. Michelle Medlock Adams also has an adorable collection of board books for little ones. Lastly, Max Lucado has a wonderful gift for writing adult and children material. The bug faces in his illustrations are exceptional.
