Can Forgiveness Disarm Fear From the Bully? Lee Ann Mancini

Teaching the concept of forgiveness is crucial for those raising Christian kids.

Children are fearful of many things; things known can be seen and heard and things unknown, such as imaginary fears. F E A R = False Evidence Appearing Real. Fear can be good – protection from a hot stove – but most fear is irrational and unwarranted. Godly fear is a good fear. Children can experience fear from a loss. Separation anxiety is prevalent among young children and can instill great fear.

If children can experience love, then they can experience grief. Grief is normal, and different ages react differently. Grief can be an opportunity to teach them that sometimes Jesus was sad. A frightened child cannot learn as easily as a child that feels secure and safe. Biblical truths are best instilled in children during preschool age because, unfortunately, they may face greater fear, grief, and bullying from other children or even adults when they start to attend elementary school.

Children need to learn early that when they love and forgive others, the aggressor loses the power to destroy. Express that the offender needs their love and the love of Jesus. A “poor me” attitude can cripple your child from becoming an adult who actively seeks to do his best in all areas of life. It would help if you did not allow your child to view himself as a victim of circumstance. You cannot control others, but you can learn to control how others’ actions affect you. It is beneficial that children understand not to let the anger from another destroy the love they have.

A true apology needs to be conveyed not only in words but in actions. When your child apologizes, they should understand what they did wrong. Children who learn how to forgive without harboring a retributive desire can help other children learn the meaning of unconditional love.
