Is Sibling Rivalry Driving You Crazy? Lee Ann Mancini

Sibling conflict is unavoidable – but you can raise your kids to learn how to deal with it.

Sibling conflict is just a part of life then you have more than one child. I believe that sibling conflict has also been exacerbated by what children see and hear on television or other media outlets.

How can you teach your children to be more respectful and civil during the times they find themselves at odds with one another?

  • First and foremost, make sure you know what your children are viewing at all times.
  • Children also need to understand that there are boundaries within the family dynamic.
  • Give each child the opportunity to express themselves freely.
  • Spend individual time with each child.
  • Don’t always jump in between an argument. Give them time to try to work out their differences.
  • Do not show favoritism for one child over another.
  • Intervein if it becomes too violent in words or actions.
  • Make sure to be fair in all you do.
  • Foster an atmosphere where everyone in the family is on the same team exhibiting love and respect.
  • Include bonding opportunities.
  • Engage in activities that are face to face.
  • Teach your children about godly virtues such as humility, empathy, and justice.

When your children have a strong faith in Christ, they will share an unbreakable bond that will hopefully one day turn from childhood rivalry into sibling harmony.
