As we talked about in a recent podcast episode, your child can learn to love reading the Bible. But we want to offer you additional help in this post.

Your child needs to see you reading your Bible too. It’s not only important to read the Bible to your child, but also to be reading it yourself. Here are some encouraging tips to help you today.

Why Reading Your Bible Matters as a Parent

Here are several reasons it’s so important for you to read your Bible as a parent.

Your child needs an example to follow.

When your child sees you reading your Bible, your child will be inspired. Children love to mimic their parents. If they see you reading your Bible, they will assume this is what adults do and will be more inclined to read the Bible themselves. Read your Bible in an open area, like the dining room or living room. Don’t make a show of reading the Bible, but make it a natural activity. Simply reading the Bible in your child’s presence will make a powerful impression on your child’s memory.

Your Bible reading boosts your faith.

We parents need God’s encouragement each day, and the Bible is the best place to receive it. We know you listen to our podcast and read our blogs because you want Christian encouragement. But even the best Christian podcasts and websites can’t compete with the faith-building power of you alone with God and your Bible. Even if you only spend five minutes per day in God’s Word, you will gain guidance and peace from it. Make this a high priority on your schedule, and you’ll be a more fulfilled, calmer, happier parent to your child.

Your Bible reading brings more discussions with your child.

By hiding God’s Word in your heart and mind, you’ll have more biblical knowledge to share with your child. The Bible tells us that we need to share God’s Word with our children in everyday conversations (see Deut. 6:6-8). This means you must have the Word of God in your mind and heart first, so you’re able to share it. As you spend time with God in his Word day by day, you’ll have more and more to share with your child.

Reading Your Bible Matters as a Parent

By reading your Bible, you’ll bless your child in countless ways. Many of the most powerful lessons we learn in life are from watching people’s actions, not only hearing their words. You can demonstrate the importance of Bible reading simply by letting your child see that you read the Bible yourself, not only reading Bible stories to your child. If you commit to reading the Bible for 30 days, your faith will grow faster than you may have ever imagined. Pray that God will speak to you as you read his Word and ask him to help you lead your child. He will be faithful to answer your prayers and help you be a good example for your child.
